Information Architecture a Web Design Extension?

Some months ago, Joshua Kaufman wrote an article for Digital-Web Magazine with the title “Information Architecture as an Extension of Web Design“. In that post, Joshua tried to propose a vision for which web designers, after a 5 minutes read, are able to successfully complete a typical IA work.

While it’s true that everything in Information Architecture for the World Wide Web cannot be learned in a day, there are several information architecture techniques that Web designers can easily learn and apply to all of their projects. This involves looking at information architecture as an extension of Web design.

This vision is simply wrong from my point of view. IA is a deeply different discipline from Interaction Design or Web Design in general. It requires a different background, leverages a different approach and involves different methods and deliverables.

Jonathan Korman, from Cooper, discuss this topic a little with this new article The Web, Information Architecture, and Interaction Design. Give it a read.
